Mens formal wear also known as formal dress is the customary term used for mens attire that is suitable for formal social occasions, such as a ballroom dance, prom, wedding, debutante cotillion & formal garden party or dinners . Formal wear usually constitutes wearing black and white garments. There are three main types of mens formal wear Morning Dress, Black Tie & White Tie. Below you can read about each type.
Types of Mens Formal Wear
- Morning Dress - Morning dress is a daytime mens formal wear attire. That consists of a tailcoat or cutaway jacket, waistcoat, and striped trousers that is typically worn with an ascot as apposed to a bow or euro neck tie. Although morning dress is the least common type of formal wear I think it is still a great choice for late morning or early afternoon weddings.
- White Tie - White tie is the most formal evening dress attire. It is meant to be worn to events such as the opera, balls, and formal dinners. White tie should only be worn only to events that take place after six o´clock. White tie should not be worn during the day.
Mens white tie formal wear will consist of the following dress coat, waistcoat, white bow tie and starched shirt. - Black Tie - Mens black tie formal ware is a semi-formal evening attire. It is worn to many types of social events. Black tie formal wear will usually consists of a dinner jacket that can be black, white, cream or even a dark navy. A dress shirt that is either white, cream or black. Black tie attire can be worn in a variety of ways when it come to the accessories. The wearer can choose to wear either a vest or cumberbund that is a color of their choosing. The wearer can choose from either a bow tie or a more modern look like the euro tie that usually matches the vest or cumberbund.

- Tuxedo Jacket Styles - There are many different styles of tuxedo jackets to choose from. Be sure to pick the one that fits your body type. For example if you are a shorter person I would not recommend going with a long coat style as it will make you look shorter. If you have a larger build in the chest and/or stomach area, I would stay away from anything that has a lot of buttons. If you are unsure what to get I recommend the classic two button jacket style as it fits all body types.
