What we mean when we say dress appropriately when you go suit shopping is that you should be clean and wear a light weight shirt. Don't show up all sweaty after just finished cutting the grass. You will feel much more comfortable if you are clean and you would not want put on a several hundred dollar piece of clothing only to soil it with your sweat and odor. If it is cold outside wear a jacket that you can slide off once you are in the store. Wearing a thick sweater with no undershirt will only make your fitting process more difficult.
